Polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIPs) are extracellular proteins that belong to the leucine-rich repeat (LRR) protein superfamily PGIPs are plant defence glycoproteins associated with the cell wall that interact with fungal PGs and modulate their activity, favouring the accumulation of oligogalacturonides that serve as elicitors of plant defence responses. In this study, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to analyze the expression profiles of PdPGIP2 and PdPGIP4 genes. RT-PCR analysis was carried out on cDNA synthesized from leave and roots of woody cuttings of two poplar clones [Nigra poli (Populus nigra) and Lux (Populus deltoides)] after treatments with two different cadmium concentrations. Cadmium is one of the most phytotoxic metal pollutants and produces several toxic symptoms in plants. The aim of this work is to understand whether the stress response to cadmium includes induction of PGIPs.
