POSTHARVEST BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF GRAY MOLD IN TABLE GRAPES. ACTIVITY ASSAY OF YEASTS AND BACTERIA. The results of antagonistic activity of bacteria and yeasts against gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) of table grapes, are reported together with information on methodology. Three strains of bacteria and one of yeast, selected for their activity with preliminary tests, were utilized in assays carried out at 2 and 20°C, with l and 24 hours between distribution of the antagonist and inoculation of the pathogen. A strain of Trichoderma sp., with known activity against B. cinerea, was also utilized. All the antagonists were effective in protecting grapes against the decay. In particular, two bacterial strains, belonging to Pseudomonas, and the yeast, belonging Kloeckera, behaved like Trichoderma sp. The latter, however, in some cases caused decay of the grapes. Higher gray mold infections were observed on grapes incubated at 2°C for 12days, then at 20°C for 2 days, in comparison with grapes incubated for 14 days at 20°C. Higher infections were also found when the pathogen was inoculated one hour after application of the antagonist by comparison with a time lag of 24 hours
