Of the cultural patrimony of Campania, southern region of Italy, among the most consistent of the national patrimony, a significant part is the monumental patrimony defined of the “grotto architecture”. Such patrimony, fundamentally realized in high medieval era, is situated in caves that become the natural environment in which the constructions, that usually have religious character, are modelled. The rocky walls that define the architectural spaces are embellished, normally, with frescos. Abstract

The problems regarding the maintenance of such precious monuments are also innumerable and tied to the housing conditions of the monastic communities that have founded them and lived in them. The grotto architecture in Campania is particularly present in the amalfitana coastal area. For the restoration an opportune diagnostic survey has been programmed and effected for the mortars and the plasters used for the construction. Such investigation has allowed to increase the technological knowledge in the conviction that diagnostics is an irreplaceable component in a correct restoration project, base of a correct project methodology. In the contribution the installations of Campania will be described and the procedures to safeguard such remarkable cultural patrimony.
